Fueling Innovation: UGA ranks No. 8 nationally for producing “unicorn” founders

The University of Georgia is solidifying its reputation as a powerhouse for innovation and professional success. In a recent analysis of venture-backed entrepreneurs, UGA ranked No. 8 nationally for the likelihood that its graduates will go on to found a “unicorn” company—privately held startups valued at more than $1 billion.

Led by Ilya Strebulaev, a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the study evaluated institutions that have produced at least 10 unicorn founders. The results showed that UGA alumni are approximately 48% more likely to launch a billion-dollar startup compared to peers from other top-tier entrepreneurship universities. Standing alongside prestigious institutions like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, and Yale, UGA was the highest-ranking university in Georgia and the only SEC institution featured on the list.

“That our VC-backed founders are nearly 50% more likely than average to become a unicorn is a true testament to the talent of our students, the vitality of our startup community, and the strength of our global UGA community,” said Chris Rhodes, executive director of UGA’s Innovation District.

This top-10 milestone reflects a university-wide, long-standing commitment to building business acumen and hands-on professional skills. Through extensive resources like the UGA Entrepreneurship Program, pitch competitions with real investors, and the collaborative spaces within the Innovation District, UGA continues to provide its students and graduates with the tools needed to turn ambitious ideas into high-impact reality.
